Prior to 1988, Harry's manufacturing industry experience was as a business manager or engineer, as outlined below:

QUEENSLAND NICKEL. From 1974 to 1980, Harry worked as an engineer and manager at the Yabulu Nicekel Refinery near Townsville in North Queensland. He was responsible for the acceptance and commissioning of the Gas Recovery, Nickel Product and Waste Disposal Areas on the Plant. He then managed the Services Section which consisted of the Power Station, Borefield and Water Supply Areas and the riggers, scaffolders, garage mechanics, building trades and numerous cleaning crews. Harry managed the Maintenance Department during the key initial year of operation of the Plant. He then moved into a General Management role in Administration where he prepared feasibility studies, managed external relations with government, owner companies, the media and the public.

CSR. In the early 1970's, Harry was employed as a mechanical engineer with CSR . He gained engineering experience at:
